In general, cosplay is about fans of manga, anime, video games, comics, TV series or movies trying to recreate their favorite characters as faithfully as possible through costumes and behavior. It all started in the Japanese manga and anime scene. But since the boom of the genre in the 90s, there is also a constantly growing fan community worldwide outside the country of origin Japan.

Nothing found.

Popular video games for cosplay

Cosplay can be divided into sub-genres and one of the most popular is certainly games and film cosplay.

Many video games have real cult status. So it’s no wonder that many cosplayers specialize in this genre. We want to introduce you to some great options here:

  • Legends of Zelda
Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure video game franchise developed and published primarily by Nintendo. The gameplay includes action-adventure and elements of action-RPG games. The series focuses on Link, the elf-like player character and main protagonist. Link is often given the task of saving Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon who is the main antagonist of the series.
  • Assassins Creed
Assassin’s Creed features a centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction, and characters intertwined with real historical events and figures. Most of the time players control an Assassin in the past, while today they also play as Desmond Miles or Assassin Initiate hunting their Templar targets.
  • Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros. is a video game released in 1985 for Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System. While Super Mario Bros. isn’t the first game in the Mario series, it’s the most iconic and introduced several series staples, from power-ups to classic enemies like Little Goombas to the basic requirement of saving Princess Toadstool from King Koopa.
  • League of Legends
League of Legends is a team-based strategy game in which two teams, each with five strong champions, compete against each other. The objective in each case is to destroy the enemy base. You can choose between 140 champions, make different moves, secure kills and destroy strategic towers.
  • NieR Automata
NieR: Automata is an action role-playing game and shares the same universe as Nier, a series derived from the Drakengard saga. The story follows the battles of Android 2B, his partner 9S, and the obsolete prototype A2 in a power war between machines created by invaders from another world and the remnants of humanity.
  • Overwatch
Overwatch is a first-person, team-based shooter for multiple players. Overwatch takes place in the mid-2070s on an Earth in the near future. About thirty years ago, robots turned on humanity in what became known as the Omnic Crisis. This eventually led to the formation of an elite team that finally ended the war. This team was the beginning of Overwatch, an international task force that spent two decades trying to maintain global stability until corruption tore it apart. Though Overwatch has been resolved, new crises loom and the world still needs heroes. The story of Overwatch is made understandable through supplementary material such as short films, comics and news articles.
  • Pokémon
The concept of the Pokémon universe, both in the video games and in the general fictional world of Pokémon, comes from the hobby of insect collecting. Players are referred to as Pokémon Trainers and have three general goals: Complete the regional Pokédex by collecting all available Pokémon species in the fictional region where a game takes place, complete the national Pokédex by transferring Pokémon from other regions, and an Train a team of powerful Pokémon from those they have caught to compete against teams of other Trainers to eventually win the Pokémon League and become the regional champion. These themes of collecting, training, and fighting are present in nearly every version of the Pokémon franchise, including the video games, the anime and manga series, and the Pokémon trading card game.
  • The Witcher
The Witcher is a role-playing game. Set in a medieval fantasy world, it tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, one of the few remaining warlocks (hired monster hunters who possess supernatural powers). In the game’s introduction, Geralt of Rivia had the task of healing King Foltest’s daughter, who had a curse that turned her into a fierce monster. Geralt successfully heals her and this is where the wizard’s work continues from this point on.

Film Cosplays

Besides videogame cosplays, movie characters are of course also popular templates for great cosplay costumes. Here are a few examples for inspiration:

  • Star Wars
Who hasn’t admired Storm Trooper and Darth Vader cosplayers at movie premieres? These and other protagonists are extremely popular with cosplayers, as of course are all Star Trek characters.
  • Lord of the Rings
The fantasy saga Lord of the Rings is perfect for picking the right character for you. It’s literally teeming with elves, trolls, hobbits, wizards, and surely everyone can find a great option.
  • Harry Potter
It also remains among Harry Potter fans to dress up as one of the sorcerer’s apprentices or as one of the Hogwarts teachers, and here too you will meet plenty of imaginatively dressed-up devotees at cinema marathons or film premieres.
